Understanding Common Types of Dents

When your car gets dented, it can be a very frustrating thing, especially if you don’t know how it happened. Different dent shapes often are caused by distinctly different impacts, and if you’re wondering how the dent on your car got there, the breakdown below can help you to try and determine how a dent happened on your car.

Rounded dents, as the name suggests, are most often caused by objects that are round in nature. Hailstones are a common source of these dents, though large rounded dents can also be caused by a soccer or basketball hitting your car while parked in the driveway.

While round dents are little wider in nature, sharp dents are more severe and deeply shaped dents that pop up typically on our car doors. These dents often have a defined valley, and can come from a few different sources. Perhaps most frequently, parking lots are the common place where these dents pop up, whether from other drivers or passengers opening a door into yours, leading to a sharp dent, or stray or runaway shopping carts striking your vehicle.

Often caused by bicycle handlebars, trailers and low tree branches, creased dents occur when something strikes your vehicle and is dragged along. This can happen from driving too closely to a wall or other vehicle that impacts and leaves a crease, or from circumstances closer to home, like a low tree branch or a child’s bicycle handlebars dragging along the side of your car.

Dents like these usually occur when something large impacts the car at a decent speed or if there a large object involved. These dents are many times much larger and irregularly shaped, and can be caused by people falling or leaning against the side of your car or from impact with an animal.
