How to Prepare Your Car if a Hailstorm is On the Way

Hailstorms cause quite a bit of damage every year. The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration reports that hail results in about $1 billion worth of damage to crops and property on an annual basis. It’s why you should do whatever you can to protect your vehicle from hail if you can. Here are some steps you can take to prepare your car if you hear that a hailstorm might be on the way.

Park your vehicle in your garage.

If you live in a state that gets many hailstorms, you should consider building a garage if you don’t already have one. A garage can protect your car from hailstorms as well as many other types of natural catastrophes. You should park your vehicle inside of it at the first sign of hail and then leave it there until the hailstorm has passed.

Find a parking garage in your area.

If you aren’t fortunate enough to own a garage, you can still provide your vehicle with the necessary protection in the event of a hailstorm. Many malls, schools, and hospitals provide covered parking for those who use them. If a hailstorm is going to be bad, you should try to take your vehicle to one of these parking facilities to ride it out. Even if you have to pay a few dollars for parking, it will be well worth the investment on your part.

Place a cover or blankets over your vehicle.

If you find yourself in a worst-case scenario and don’t have anywhere to take your vehicle to cover it, you can create shelter for it yourself. There are some companies that sell car covers designed to protect vehicles from hail. You can also cover your car in regular blankets with duct tape to hold them down. This certainly isn’t the most efficient way to cover your car, but it should get the job done and stop hail from doing damage.
