Tips for Driving Safely if you’re Stuck in a Hailstorm

Driving during a hailstorm can be incredibly dangerous, so if you suspect that one is coming your way, you should try to stay off the road at all costs. However, if you get stuck in a hailstorm while driving, there are steps you can take to prevent hail from doing too much damage to you or your vehicle.

Ways to stay safe while driving through a hailstorm:

Pull over as soon as the hail starts and stay in your vehicle

If you’re outside during a hailstorm, the hail can cause serious injuries, so you shouldn’t leave your vehicle when the hail starts. You should also not continue to drive in the hail, since driving can compound the effect that hail will have on your vehicle. If possible, try to pull underneath an overpass to better protect your car. If that option isn’t available, at the very least, you should pull over to the side of the road until the hailstorm passes.

Angle your vehicle so the hail hits the front of it

Your vehicle’s windshield is designed to withstand hail, but the other windows in your vehicle are not. So if you can, try to point the car so that the majority of the hail is hitting the windshield directly and not the other windows. This should be enough to prevent the hail from breaking those windows.

Lie down in the vehicle and avoid facing the windows

Even if you take all of the proper precautions, there’s still a chance that your car windows could break during a hailstorm. You don’t want to be facing them directly since the glass could cause injuries to occur. Instead, lie down in your car with your back to the windows. If you have a blanket, towel, or extra clothing in your car, Simple Insights suggests that you should use them to cover up and protect yourself from broken glass.

Once a hailstorm has passed, you can get back on the road, assuming there is no flooding on the streets. But before you do, you should check your vehicle for hail damage and call your insurance company as soon as possible if there is. You will also need to make an appointment at a repair shop to have your vehicle fixed.
